Natural Home-made Toothpastes
For most of us, our day beings and ends with the same thing – toothpaste. As we all know, a good start gives us positive vibes for the rest of the day. So, what could be better than a natural home-made toothpaste that gives you healthy, white teeth & gums, and clean, fresh breath to kickstart your day? Say goodbye to all those harsh chemicals and pastes and give your teeth and gums some natural care.
Here, we give you a few recipes for homemade toothpaste that we have tried, tested and fallen in love with.
Simple whitening toothpaste:
Here is a recipe for a simple toothpaste that can be made very quickly and is effective in cleaning and whitening teeth.
Ingredients:
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 1 tsp organic mountain salt
- Edible coconut oil
- 1-2 tsp. organic arrowroot powder as an optional thickener
Mix the salt and baking soda together. Add enough oil in portions, to make a paste. A few teaspoons of arrowroot powder can be added for the right consistency. This paste can be stored in a cool, dark place for 1 to 2 weeks.
For those who do not like the taste of coconut oil, filtered water can be added instead.
Turmeric toothpaste
This recipe makes use of the age-old tradition (especially in India) of using natural turmeric in our foods, medicine and on our skin. Turmeric helps you whiten your teeth. As an anti-bacterial agent, turmeric keeps your mouth clean and your teeth and gums healthy.
Ingredients:
- 4 tbsp organic turmeric
- 2 tbsp baking soda
- ½ tbsp coconut oil
Mix the above ingredients into a paste and use like a normal toothpaste.
Natural Tooth powder
For those of you, who prefer powders over paste, here’s an anti-bacterial tooth powder that leaves you with a refreshing taste. Mix together the following ingredients and store in an airtight container.
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tbsp Himalayan Salt
- 1 tbsp cinnamon powder
- 1 tsp cloves
To use, add some powder to your brush and start brushing like you would normally. The saliva that you secrete should be enough moisture for the powder to form a paste. Additionally, a little water or even a few drops of organic edible coconut oil can be added if desired. The cinnamon leaves your mouth feeling refreshed while the cloves have anti-bacterial properties that help clean and strengthen your teeth and gums.
Tip: Add a few drops of your favourite organic essential oil to any of the above recipes to add a refreshing flavour! The following oils are good additions to your paste:
-
- Cinnamon
- Clove
- Lemon
- Rosemary
- Wintergreen oil – lends a minty flavour.
